We've Gone Green When you book your event with Two Rivers Convention Center and the Avalon Theatre, you are working with a facility that is mindful of its impact on the environment. We believe in producing events that leave a minimal negative footprint. The following are just some of the ways Two Rivers Convention Center and the Avalon Theatre are striving to be environmentally conscious:
- Plastic bottles, glass bottles, cardboard, paper, aluminum and other metals used in the process of preparing your event or consumed at your event are recycled daily.
- Batteries, fluorescent bulbs and printer cartridges are recycled weekly, or disposed of in environmentally responsible ways.
- The option for you to choose bulk condiments vs. individual packets, filtered tap water vs. bottled water, and local and organic meals vs. non-organic foods delivered long distances.
- Facility custodians use a variety of Green Seal-certified cleaning products to clean floors, restrooms and other areas prior to and following your event.
- Paper towels and other paper products used throughout the facility contain a percentage of previously recycled material.
- Hand-washing soaps in the restrooms and other detergents used in the dishwashing facilities are environmentally friendly.
- Many food and beverage containers used in the service of your event are made from corn or other organic-based products that break down quickly and are not harmful to the environment.
- The major service contractors that we employ are selected and evaluated based on how environmentally conscious they are in their operations and service delivery of their products for our use.
- Major facility renovation projects for the convention center and theater will be completed with energy efficiency and product sustainability. For example:
- Newly carpeted meeting rooms to be made from previously recycled materials and using environmentally friendly fabric dyes. - Solar Panels on our roof help power the convention center on a daily basis. View how much energy we’ve generated since July 2009 to help power the convention center.
We want to help you do your part in trying to be more environmentally conscious for your next event or meeting with us. The following checklist will help you get started and to stay on track:
- Establish commitment to sustainable practices by executives or association directors. Post your organization’s policies and commitment on event or conference website.
- Provide information on conference electronically through e-mail and websites.
- Register attendees, sell tickets and confirm attendance online and via e-mail.
- Consider offering carbon offset programs to attendees to offset their travel.
- Use badge holders and lanyards made of post-consumer content.
- Ask that attendees return badge holders at the end of the conference. Provide convenient and accessible locations for drop-off. Our convention center event staff can help with that.
- Eliminate or reduce paper used for conference agendas and/or programs.
- Offer materials online, or on a disk or flash drive. Communicate and encourage this practice with presenters.
- Print double-sided and use post-consumer content paper with vegetable or soy ink.
- Conference bags should be post-consumer content or made of sustainable material.

- Consider giving a reusable mug or water bottle for attendees to use throughout the conference. Complement this by asking our staff for water fill stations instead of plastic bottle water supplies.
- Produce signs and banners on post-consumer content. When possible, do not date material to allow for reuse.
- Encourage and/or implement recycling and/or composting within the meeting venue. We are well-versed in this, so don't hesitate to ask for assistance.
- Request that venues do not place head-table water at podiums. Instead, encourage speakers to bring their own water bottles.
- Choose a venue centrally located near hotels and restaurant. Two Rivers Convention Center is surrounded by restaurants and hotels.
- Encourage public transportation.
- Provide directions to the event using various public transportation and bicycle routes.
- Choose local vendors for products when possible to minimize transport and shipping impact. We can help you identify a variety of local contractors to provide the ancillary services you need.
We encourage you to browse these sites to learn more about environmental responsibility resources and help you find ways to make your next meeting or event with us greener.
